10/28/2012 – Telephone Briefing – 01

Old Saybrook Flood MapThe Old Saybrook Office of Emergency Management has issued a Mandatory Evacuation Order for three areas of town.

Area 1 – all homes and businesses south of I-95
Area 2 – homes and businesses in other low lying areas and
Area 3 – those homes and businesses near the CT River.

If your home or business are in these areas, you will be handed evacuation instructions by a public safety professional soon. If you are not home a yellow flyer will be left at your house.
Please know that this mornings voluntary evacuation has been upgraded, I repeat has been upgraded to a mandatory evacuation for all homes and businesses south of I-95.
While we cannot force you to evacuate Public Safety HAS ORDERED a mandatory evacuation effective immediately.
The destruction that will be caused by this storm is unmatched to anything we have experienced in Old Saybrook before.

Buses will begin driving through evacuated areas at 4 PM. If you are staying at the shelter, there is parking at the high school. If you need to relocate your vehicle, you may park your car on Main Street.

Your FIRST option is to seek shelter
NORTH of I-95 with family, friends, or in a hotel.

Your SECOND option is to seek shelter
at the Town Evacuation Center.

If you need to evacuate with your dog or your cat – PLEASE LISTEN CAREFULLY. WE WILL PERMIT YOUR DOG OR CAT AT OUT SHELTER ONLY IF THEY ARRIVE IN A CRATE. Please also bring vaccination paperwork for your animal.

THOSE WHO LIVE IN NORTHERN OLD SAYBROOK, WHO DO NOT NEED YOUR PET CRATE PLEASE BRING IT TO THE HIGH SCHOOL NOW.
WE WILL PERMIT YOUR DOG OR CAT AT OUR SHELTER ONLY IF THEY ARRIVE IN A CRATE.

There will be a very limited supply of crates available at the High School to use, based on donations.

The Evacuation Center is located at the
Old Saybrook Senior High School – 1111 Boston Post Road.
The Center will open at 3 PM TODAY!
Please remember that www.stormsandy.com is your single source for emergency information. We are monitoring your questions and will provide answers as soon as possible.
If you choose to ignore our MANDATORY Evacuation Order, Public Safety may NOT be able to assist you!

  1. What about the nursing home located at 1775 Boston Post Rd. Apple Rehab Saybrook?

  2. Is there aMap that shows the Category 4 Zones in Old Saybrook?
The Map linked to the Original Emergency Evacuation Notice only show Category 1 and 2. Govenor Malloy saif that he asked the coastal towns to react as if it was a Category 4. I am assuming that that is why the High Water mark was made I-95.

  3. Is there a resource to find out the exact elevation of my home by address or neighborhood that is more specific than the FEMA maps?

  4. If you do not receive a flyer, are you required to evacuate? I am right at 95 and the CT River but on high ground. It doesn’t seem that my neighborhood received flyers…we are between the bridges. Thanks. The website is a great help.

  5. My parents live in the area just south of 95 and about 400 feet from the Connecticut river, along with many others in a subdivision. They have not received a yellow flyer. Does this mean that the evacuation is not mandatory for them? I’m not sure they will evacuate unless they are notified it is mandatory.
